You have three strong CVs for a process engineering role. On paper, they look alike. Similar qualifications, similar plants, similar projects. And yet the difference between them could be the difference between a plant that runs safely and one that has a serious incident.
In mining, metals, and heavy process industries, the chemical or process engineer is not a back-office technical hire. They are responsible for how the plant runs. Their decisions sit on top of safety, environmental compliance, and output, all at once. A wrong hire here is not a slow problem. It can be a dangerous one.
That is why this role has to be assessed for more than a matching CV. Here is how to do it.
Process engineering in heavy industry works with unforgiving conditions. These often include:
A plant that processes or stores hazardous substances above set quantities is a Major Hazard Installation under the Occupational Health and Safety Act. That status brings legal duties, because a loss of containment could harm workers and the public.
The process engineer sits at the centre of this. They design, run, and troubleshoot the systems where these risks live. So their judgment is not separate from safety. It is a large part of what keeps the plant safe.
Start with the baseline. For a professional process engineering role, that means the right qualification and, where the role requires it, ECSA registration.
Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa confirms the person has met a national professional standard. It is a real signal, and for some work it is a legal requirement. But it is a starting point, not the whole picture.
A qualification and a registration tell you what someone is entitled to do. They do not tell you how that person performs on a live plant, under pressure, when something goes wrong. That is what the rest of your assessment is for. A good experience and competency evaluation goes beyond the CV to find it.
This is the heart of the role, and it is where the strongest candidates separate themselves. Process-safety judgment is the ability to hold safety and output in balance, and to protect safety when the two collide.
You cannot read this from a CV, so test it with real scenarios. For example:
Listen for a candidate who reasons clearly and puts safety first without losing the plant. A weaker one reaches for the production answer too quickly, or cannot explain their thinking.
There is a real difference between designing a process and running one. Both matter, but they are not the same skill, and a CV can blur them.
A candidate may have strong design credentials and little time on a live plant. For a role that involves daily operation, commissioning, or troubleshooting, that gap matters. The plant does not behave like the drawing.
So ask what the candidate has done, not just what they have been near. Have they commissioned a unit? Have they diagnosed a process upset while it was happening? Have they made a call under pressure and lived with the result? Hands-on answers tell you far more than a list of projects.
Heavy process operations run inside hard environmental limits. Effluent, emissions, and hazardous waste are all regulated, and the boundaries are not flexible.
Water is a clear example. Under the National Water Act, discharging waste or effluent into a water resource generally requires authorisation. A water treatment or process plant that gets this wrong faces real legal and reputational consequences.
The right engineer treats these limits as fixed, and designs and runs the process to stay within them. So probe this directly. Ask how the candidate has handled compliance in practice, and how they respond when a process drifts toward a limit. Someone who treats compliance as negotiable is a risk, not an asset.
Process engineering shares fundamentals across industries, but the practice differs. Experience in one setting does not always transfer cleanly to another.

So be clear about your process, and assess whether the candidate's experience fits it. Relevant experience has to be relevant to your operation, not just to the discipline.
